Jumbos Defeat Alum to Break Two-Year Losing Streak

9/17/2014 1:21 PM For the past two years, the Jumbos have suffered crushing defeats at the hand of their former teammates. Excuses were being thrown around left and right, with words like “tempo run” and “workout” clouding the integrity of the event. This year, the alumni came into the race as heavy favorites to reclaim their crown. Connor Rose, speaking for the alumni group, said in a private message before the race “we are going to go 1-4 obviously,” and with regards to the core pack of current Tufts runners “I think Scott could beat ‘em. He’s a beast.” Even the current athletes were prepared for the worst. Co-Captain Nick Guarnaccia said the Wednesday before the race “I think we’re totally screwed.”

Despite all of this trash t...

O Connor\'s victory propels Jumbo depth to 2nd at Bowdoin Invite

9/16/2014 12:03 PM On a cool early September day, the Jumbos traveled north to open the racing season at the Bowdoin Invitational. In what will certainly be the smallest meet of the season, they faced off against 5 other teams from around the region: Johnson & Wales, Maine Maritime, University of Maine Farmington, Lyndon State, and hosts Bowdoin College. Tufts took second place in the race, falling only to Bowdoin who had a strong performance on their home course.

The performance of Sophomore Luke O’Connor was the highlight of the race for the Jumbos, as he took his first collegiate victory in a personal best time of 25:39. O’Connor showed his strength in the final stages of the race, opening a 12 second gap on the rest of the leading pack over the fin...

Bhalla qualifies for Nationals at Last Chance

3/13/2014 4:10 PM Veer Bhalla ’16 went into the Tufts Last Chance Meet last Thursday, on the bubble of qualifying for Nationals in the 800 meters. Teammate Mitch Black ’16 had already ran the fastest time in the nation earlier in the year to punch his ticket to the big dance, and now it was up to Bhalla to follow in Black’s footsteps.

After Black rabbited the field through 1:22 at the 600, Bhalla was able to close and was able to run a PR of 1:52.86 on a flat track, which converts to a 1:51.26 on a banked track. This was good enough for the fifth fastest time nationally, and to give Bhalla a ticket to Lincoln, Nebraska for Nationals this weekend.

As a tune-up to the mile at Nationals, tri-captain Jamie Norton ’14 was also entered in the race, ...

Record-Busting Season Continues at Open New Englands with 4x400

3/5/2014 11:46 AM A few Jumbos headed five miles down the road to the Boston University Track and Tennis Center to the NEICAAA championship (otherwise known as Open New Englands) on Saturday in order to qualify for Div. III nationals, improve on their seed times, or, for many athletes, to run a final fast time on an indoor track before outdoor season begins.

The Jumbos had some electrifying performances, but the race of the day wasn’t until late in the meet. In this race, the 4x400 meter relay, the team of Mitch Black ’16, Graham Beutler ’14, Francis Goins ’16, and Alex Kasemir ’16 broke the former school record set by Beutler, Goins, and former runners Vinnie Lee and Ben Crastnopol in 2012. Their time of 3:15.35 put them in 4th place overall, a...

Strength Across Events, Four Victories Highlight Jumbos\' 2nd Place Finish at DIIIs

2/26/2014 8:36 AM The Jumbos competed at the first championship meet of the season this past weekend - the Division III New Englands. With All-New England performances in the throws, sprints, mid-distance, distance, multi events, and all three relays, nationally 9th-ranked Tufts placed second to 7th-ranked MIT 138-94.

Andrew Osborne ’14 and Alex Karys ’16 started off the meet on Friday by competing in the first four of their seven events in the heptathlon. Both battled well through their additional three events on Saturday and earned All-New England honors, as Osborne took fifth with a score of 4376 points, while Karys took sixth with 4297 points. Their strong start set the tone for the rest of the meet.

Mid-D propelled the Jumbos to 20 of their p...
