Veer Bhalla 16 went into the Tufts Last Chance Meet last Thursday, on the bubble of qualifying for Nationals in the 800 meters. Teammate Mitch Black 16 had already ran the fastest time in the nation earlier in the year to punch his ticket to the big dance, and now it was up to Bhalla to follow in Blacks footsteps.
After Black rabbited the field through 1:22 at the 600, Bhalla was able to close and was able to run a PR of 1:52.86 on a flat track, which converts to a 1:51.26 on a banked track. This was good enough for the fifth fastest time nationally, and to give Bhalla a ticket to Lincoln, Nebraska for Nationals this weekend.
As a tune-up to the mile at Nationals, tri-captain Jamie Norton 14 was also entered in the race, running a solid 1:55.53 on the banked track. Alex Apostolides 16 also closed out his season in the race, as he ran 1:57.25 for ninth overall.
In other action on the day, tri-captain Ben Wallis 14 ran a brave and gusty 5000 meters, and crossed the line in 15:10.04 after 25 laps of the Gantcher track. Graham Beutler 14, who had already qualified for Nationals in the 400 meterss placed third in the 200 meters by running 22.37. Brian Williamson 15

A few Jumbos headed five miles down the road to the Boston University Track and Tennis Center to the NEICAAA championship (otherwise known as Open New Englands) on Saturday in order to qualify for Div. III nationals, improve on their seed times, or, for many athletes, to run a final fast time on an indoor track before outdoor season begins.
The Jumbos had some electrifying performances, but the race of the day wasnt until late in the meet. In this race, the 4x400 meter relay, the team of Mitch Black 16, Graham Beutler 14, Francis Goins 16, and Alex Kasemir 16 broke the former school record set by Beutler, Goins, and former runners Vinnie Lee and Ben Crastnopol in 2012. Their time of 3:15.35 put them in 4th place overall, a time that was second only to Southern Maine among Div. 3 teams, and a time that now ranks 4th in the nation. With one week to go for teams to qualify for NCAAs, the Jumbos, who sit comfortably in the top 12 4x400 teams in the nation, will most likely send this quartet to compete for a national title at Div. III Nationals.
In other action, Nick Usoff 17 ran the 4th fastest Jumbo time ever in the 500 meter dash, as he ran 66.06 in the preliminaries. Uso

The Jumbos competed at the first championship meet of the season this past weekend - the Division III New Englands. With All-New England performances in the throws, sprints, mid-distance, distance, multi events, and all three relays, nationally 9th-ranked Tufts placed second to 7th-ranked MIT 138-94.
Andrew Osborne 14 and Alex Karys 16 started off the meet on Friday by competing in the first four of their seven events in the heptathlon. Both battled well through their additional three events on Saturday and earned All-New England honors, as Osborne took fifth with a score of 4376 points, while Karys took sixth with 4297 points. Their strong start set the tone for the rest of the meet.
Mid-D propelled the Jumbos to 20 of their points, as Veer Bhalla 16 took the 600 meter crown in a new school record in 1:20.46. Bhalla was in second place until about 200 meters to go, when he separated from USM Junior Kevin Desmond to take both 10 points and a new school record. His training partner, Mitch Black 16, also earned himself a New England title in the 800 meters as well. Black, who still holds the number one time in the nation in the 800 meters this season, made the race an exci

This past weekend, Tufts hosted their final regular season meet of indoors, the Tufts Cupid Invitational. The USTFCCCA deemed it the meet of the weekend due to both regional rivalries that would blossom at the meet and due to the strength of teams competing. One such event that allowed the USTFCCCA to award Tufts this honor was the Distance Medley Relay, which ended up becoming one of the deepest DMRs to ever take place in Division 3 history.
In this DMR, which showcased top ranked teams such as Central College, who flew all the way out from Iowa to take on the competition at this meet, Tufts took 2nd as 7 of the top 8 times in the country were set.
Mitch Black 16 ran the 1200 meter leg for the Jumbos. An 800 meter specialist, Black handed off the baton to Graham Beutler 14 tight with the other squads, running a 3:01 split. Beutler then gapped the field in his leg, the 400 meters, splitting 49.1 before handing off to Veer Bhalla 16, the 800 meter leg. Bhalla increased the Jumbo lead in the race by posting a 1:54 split before handing off to tri-captain Jamie Norton 14, who then anchored the 1600 meter leg in a 4:13. Norton fought ferociously on the final lap and was jus

With the distance squad taking advantage of the bouncy banks of the BU track, the throwers and jumpers used the fast runways of MIT to notch PRs and more qualifying marks at the Gordon Kelly Invitational. Mitch Stallman 15 and Pietro Possenti 17 both cleared 4.00 meters in the pole vault; marks which lead the team. In the long jump, Bryson Hoover-Hankerson 16 qualified for the Div. 3 New England meet with his 6.46 m (212.5) leap. By qualifying in the long jump, Hoover-Hankerson affirmed that Tufts now has a Div. 3 New England qualifier in every event, an accomplishment that not many other teams can claim.
Brian Williamson 15 and Atticus Swett 16 continued their dominating seasons in the throws as they took 2nd (15.18 m/499.75) and 3rd (14.64 m/480.5) in the shot put. Swett later returned in the weight throw to heave the weight 14.47 m (475.75) on his way to a 3rd place finish. Freshman Thomas Wang '17 added a runner-up finish in the 60m hurdles (9.07) to cap an impressive day across all field disciplines for Tufts.
The Jumbos will next host the annual Tufts Cupid Invitational at the Gantcher Center, held this coming weekend. There, they will attempt to qualify m
