Gojumbos: Home of Men’s Cross Country and Track & Field at Tufts University
10/21/2014 6:59 PM The Jumbos sent a small squad of 6 runner to the Connecticut College Invitational this past weekend, while their top 12 runners rested for the upcoming NESCAC Championships. Tufts fought hard to a 13th place finish on a warm and windy day in CT, defeating several of their opponent’s varsity teams.

Senior Joe Poupard lead his teammates through the early stages of the race with an aggressive first mile. He was soon joined by freshmen Sam Little and John Greenberg, who have worked well together in every race this year. Little has shown great progress in adjusting to the 8k distance, moved up well through the middle part of the race, and was the first Tufts runner across the line in a time of 27:05. The experience he has gained in the chao...
10/14/2014 12:09 PM The Jumbos traveled across town to Franklin Park this past weekend, in what was the closest thing to a home cross-country meet they will have all season, for the NEICAAA All-New England Cross Country Championships. The squad was split up for the first time this season, with the top 7 running in the varsity race and the rest of the team running sub-varsity. The varsity squad came in 18th overall in an unusually competitive field, and more importantly were the 4th DIII team. The JV team fared much better, finishing 3rd as a team and besting cross-town rival MIT as by 1 point as the top DIII group.

In the varsity race, the Jumbos struggled to establish their position early on in the race. The team found itself in the back half of the race i...
9/30/2014 2:31 PM The Tufts Men’s Cross Country team met their first true test against stiff regional competition at the Purple Valley Classic Invitational at Williams College. The race featured 7 teams ranked in the top 10 in New England, and was a great opportunity for teams to preview the NCAA Regionals course. A tough course combined with unseasonably warm temperatures lead to slow times across the board, but Tufts came out with a strong team finish of 5th place, defeating last year’s regional runner up team Middlebury College and showing they have what it takes to compete with some of the top DIII teams in the country.

The Jumbos once again took a conservative approach to the first couple of miles in the race. The core pack of Tufts runners came ...
9/17/2014 1:21 PM For the past two years, the Jumbos have suffered crushing defeats at the hand of their former teammates. Excuses were being thrown around left and right, with words like “tempo run” and “workout” clouding the integrity of the event. This year, the alumni came into the race as heavy favorites to reclaim their crown. Connor Rose, speaking for the alumni group, said in a private message before the race “we are going to go 1-4 obviously,” and with regards to the core pack of current Tufts runners “I think Scott could beat ‘em. He’s a beast.” Even the current athletes were prepared for the worst. Co-Captain Nick Guarnaccia said the Wednesday before the race “I think we’re totally screwed.”

Despite all of this trash t...
9/16/2014 12:03 PM On a cool early September day, the Jumbos traveled north to open the racing season at the Bowdoin Invitational. In what will certainly be the smallest meet of the season, they faced off against 5 other teams from around the region: Johnson & Wales, Maine Maritime, University of Maine Farmington, Lyndon State, and hosts Bowdoin College. Tufts took second place in the race, falling only to Bowdoin who had a strong performance on their home course.

The performance of Sophomore Luke O’Connor was the highlight of the race for the Jumbos, as he took his first collegiate victory in a personal best time of 25:39. O’Connor showed his strength in the final stages of the race, opening a 12 second gap on the rest of the leading pack over the fin...
