The Tufts Men’s Track and Field team opened up their indoor season this past weekend as they competed at home in the Gantcher Center for Tufts Invite #1. There were a lot of notable performances among the different event groups.

Freshman Andrew DiMati won the 400m in a 50.79, while junior Francis Goins came in third with a 51.11. Junior Veer Bhalla won the 600m in 1:22.77, narrowly missing the 600m Gantcher Center record. Also in the 600m, freshman PD McCawley ran a 1:25.14 to win his heat in the 600m. Junior Mitchell Black inched into the Tufts all-time top 10 list in winning the 1000m running a 2:30.28, while teammate Alex “Greece” Apostolides ran a 2:36.68 for eighth.

In the mile, sophomore James Traester came in fourth with a 4:27.66 and senior Nick Guarnaccia came in sixth with a 4:28.78. Senior Michael Curley ran a gutsy 3000m, taking second place in that event with a 8:45.86. Curley’s effort qualified him for the DIII New England Championships in February, our first championship meet of the year, to join DiMaiti, Goins, Bhalla, McCawley, and Black as Jumbos who have already notched an invitation.

Sophomore Pietro Possenti came in fifth place in the pole vault, clearing 13’7’’ and tying his lifetime PR. In the throws, senior Brian Williamson and Junior Atticus Swett had impressive early season performances as Williamson placed third in the shot put (48’10”) and sixth in the weight throw (47’9”) and Swett placed eighth in the weight throw (47’1”). All three also have qualified for the DIII New England Championship, as did junior Bryson Hoover-Hankerson with his PR-tying 7.22 in the 60m dash.

Tufts finished third overall in the team standings, however, the team was first among the Division III schools that competed. Overall, the Jumbos posted some very promising times and marks especially considering how early it is in the season. The team competes next Saturday (1/24) as they travel up to Brunswick, ME for the Bowdoin Invitational. The Jumbos look forward to improving their times from last week against several NESCAC foes and adding more qualifying performances to join their teammates throughout our championship season.
