The Jumbos opened up the 2016 indoor season this past Saturday as they competed at the first of several Tufts Invites. The meet, which was held at home at the Gantcher Indoor Track, was filled with some fantastic early season performances. Additionally, the meet was the first under new head coach Joel Williams.

One major highlight was the performance of the freshman class as a whole. As arguably one of the most talented incoming recruiting class in TUXC/TUTF history, members of the first-year crew posted some stellar marks in their indoor debuts. Nico Agosti and Josh Etkind each placed first in their respective events as Nico ran 52.52 in the 400 and Josh jumped 44'0 1/2" in the triple jump to go along with a stellar time of 8.84 in the 60m hurdles. Nico and Josh were also a part of the all-freshman 4x200. The relay, which also featured Anthony Kardonsky and Thomas Miller, placed second overall in a time of 1:34.96. On the distance side, freshmen Matt McDermott, Dylan Jones, Rory Buckman, and Kyle Anderson all finished 3-5-6-10 respectively in the 3000m, running times of 9:07, 9:10, 9:12, and 9:18. Josh's marks in the triple jump and hurdles in particular stood out as both placed him among the top ten freshmen ever to compete in those events in indoors. And we have only had one meet!

Many veteran Jumbos had fantastic days as well. All-American senior stud Veer Bhalla won the 1000m in a personal best time of 2:30.12. In addition, sophomore Drew DiMaiti placed first in the 600m with a time of 1:23.02, a time that launches him into the top ten all time for any age of Jumbo in the 600m indoor event. Senior captain Atticus Swett was third in the shot-put with a throw of 14.56m and Swett’s classmate Francis Goins was fourth in the 200 in 23.41. Last but not least, the 4x400 relay which consisted of DiMaiti, Goins, and rookies Kardonsky and Henry Hintermeister finished first in a time of 3:30.30.

Next weekend, the squad makes the trek up to Brunswick, ME to compete at the Bowdoin Invitational held at Bowdoin College. The team looks forward to keeping the momentum going and posting more solid performances against some rival NESCAC and New England foes. #ROLL’BOS
