Three Jumbos Honored with Regional Awards

(3/7/2007)

As both the men's and women's teams gear up for another national championship competition, their hard work and dedication were acknowledged by the rest of the region. Senior tri-captain Fred Jones (LJ, TJ) of the men's team and Catherine Beck (DMR, 5k) of the women's team were again voted regional athletes of the year. This marks the 2nd time that each athlete has been honored with this award. The consistency that Jones and Beck have brought to the New England Track & Field scene was impossible to ignore.

Jones has broken the 14m mark each time he competed this year, with his season best of 14.42m coming just recently at the All New England meet. He brings that and a 7.22m long jump mark to the national meet this coming weekend. Beck won both the mile and 3k at the New England Championships following that up with a 9:31 3k performance at the Open NE championships. Her 16:45 seed in the 5k is also good enough for the top spot in the nation. Beck also anchors the Jumbos' DMR team which is seeded 2nd in the national meet.

In addition to Beck and Jones, Men's Head Coach Ethan Barron was also awarded regional coach of the year honors. In his second year as the teams' head coach, the Jumbos repeated their 2nd place performance at the Division III New England Championships. This is Coach Barron's first regional award. In his first year as coach in 2005-2006, Barron won NESCAC coach of the year honors in both Cross Country and Outdoor Track.
