(5/4/2007) Full Results

Tufts University stands in second place after two days at the Division III New England Championships. MIT currently leads the competition with 30 points, while Jumbos follow closely with 26. The meet is far from over as only the 10K, Hammer Throw, Long Jump and Decathlon have been contested.

Tufts fielded three athletes in the Decathlon that began on Thursday. Skip Pagel was the star of day one. Skip set personal bests in all five events. At the midway point, Skip led the competition with an impressive 3328 points. Jared Engleking and older brother Derek Engleking stood in fourth and fifth place respectively after day one with scores of 3181 and 3179. Jared started off day two of the decathlon setting a personal best in the 110 hurdles (15.32). Skip continued his streak of PRs in running 16.37. Derek also ran well with his 16.77 clocking. Jared had strong showing in the Discus, Javelin and 1500 to earn fifth place overall and score 6051 points. Skip was on pace to an exceptional performance, but he unfortunately ran into difficulty in the Pole Vault and Javelin. Skip cleared 10'07.50" in the vault--well under his best of 13'03".50. His Javelin toss was more than 20 under his best. Skip did finish off the day with a fast 1500 (4:30.15). Despite his difficulties, Skip was still able to exceed the National Provisional standard of 6000 points as he totaled 6087. Derek scored better in every event on Day 2 than he did during the Patriots Day Decathlon. Derek finished second overall with a score of 6137. It's a rare event where three athletes from the same school get national qualifiers.

Fred Jones was the only other Jumbo competitor on day two of the championships. Fred popped off a jump of 7.12/23'04.50" to lead the competition. Branden Mirach of Williams College matched Fred jump but also sported a second best jump of 7.07. Fred jumped 7.06 on his final attempt to come just one centimeter short. Fred has a few technical issues to work on, but is rounding into great form as championship season progresses.

Four athletes, four provisional qualifiers through two days of competition. These four will be joined by the rest of the Jumbos tomorrow, the final day of the championships.
