The Tufts DMR team finished 6th in a new school record of 10:07.02, which is also good enough for a provisional qualification. This is seen as an opening benchmark that will be lowered in following attempts. The DMR is scheduled to make their second try at the Valentine Meet at BU on the 11th of February.

Brian McNamara lined up on the track less than one hour after watching a duel between Olympians Alan Webb and Mark Carroll in the 3000m. With the extra adrenaline pumping the gun went off with a bang. McNamara took out the pack in sub 30 for the first 200m before handing over the lead. After coming through the 800m in 2:02, he proceeded to hang on for dear life and handed off in a very respectable 3:05 high 1200m leg. Anxious to reconnect to the main pack Trevor Williams ran a blistering 23 second opening 200m, yet found himself no closer to the pack. Straining slightly from the opening pace, Williams closed in with a 50 mid 400m split. Patrick Mahoney faired a little better with the pacing. At first it looked like Pat would fall into the same hole, but he ran within himself to split a 56 second opening 400m. Still by himself, Mahoney tried furiously to reconnect with the field but couldn?t make up anymore ground in the final 400m and handed off the baton at 1:55 high. At that point Matt Fortin found himself alone as the front pack took off erasing any chance of closing the gap. Stumbling in the first few laps, it wasn't until the Iona leg caught up and served as a pacer that Fortin returned to a respectable pace. After coming through in 2:10 and watching the clock on each lap tick away, Fortin decided to pass Iona and kick it in from 500m out. Closing in a 61 second 400m, Fortin crossed the line in 10:07.02 to give Tufts a provisional qualifying time and a new school record.

The DMR team would like to thank the 20 athletes and alumni that came out to the meet. Without the cheering and splits from our teammates and alumni, this would not have been possible.
