Reeuwijk and Bardin Qualify in Pentathlon

Rookie Tobie Reeuwijk and senior Bobby Bardin kicked off the weekends competition for the Jumbos with Friday nights pentathlon. Both the mens and womens fields were very competitive as the evening played host to multiple national qualifiers. Both Reeuwijk and Bardin had their goals set on a PR in the pentathlon as well as a New England qualifier in the event and as the Gantcher Center doors closed at 10:30pm, both had achieved their qualifier and set a great tone for the next days events.

Both athletes got off to a great start with pentathlon PRs in the High Hurdles, Reeuwijks was a lifetime best. Such a strong start was key for the pair as it provided a nice buffer and relieved some of the pressure around hitting a qualifier. With the competition moving to the LJ runway however, the two competitors saw more mixed results.

On the one hand, Reeuwijk added a second lifetime PR to his tally with his jump of 5.95m; however, Bardin had a rougher showing with a best, measured mark of 5.38m, well under his PR. Yet as the competition continued to the shot put circle, both athletes demonstrated the poise required from a multi-event athlete.

Bardin responded with a shot put just 1 cm shy of his lifetime best and Reeuwijk continued his tear with another pentathlon PR. With both athletes back on track, the momentum continued to build in the high jump. Reeuwijk and Bardin would both jump from the
