Two Tufts athletes had standout performances over the weekend, both bettering their own school records and securing trips to Nationals. Junior Nate Brigham a native of Penacook, New Hampshire and a Merrimack Valley High grad posted a time of 30:17.92 in the 10,000 meters at the IC4A Championship at Yale. Brigham went through the 5K mark of his race in 15:02, the same time he posted the week before in the open 5K. His fourth place finish bettered the school record he already owned by 15 seconds. The time automatically qualifies him for the Division III national championship at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois. See results from Nate's race here

This weekend?s other stellar performance came from freshman standout Fred Jones of Northfield Mount Herman High in Northfield, Massachusetts. His triple jump of 48? 3.25? was a provisionally national qualifying mark. This moves him to 3rd on the qualifying list, all but guaranteeing him a trip to Nationals. The leap not only made Jones ECAC champion, but also was a Tufts school record, an ECAC championship meet record, and a Williams track facility record.

Jones?s win and his 4th place finish in the long jump led the Jumbos to an eight place finish at the ECAC meet against teams from throughout New England, New York, and the eastern seaboard. Trevor Williams posted a personal best in the 400 meter hurdles for the second week in a row, taking 10th place. Senior captain Peter Jurczynski took 7th in the steeplechase, his last race as a Jumbo. In the throws, sophomore Brandon Udelhofen placed 15th in the discus and junior Dan March took 9th in the hammer. The meet began with sweltering heat which affected the early events. However, severe lightening stopped the meet twice for more than two hours. Young distance studs Josh Kennedy and Matt Lacey ended up warming up 3 times for the 5K, and eventually raced to 6th and 7th place finishes respectively. Also delayed was the team?s 4x400 relay squad. Carre and Williams were joined by 800 meter competitors Pat Mahoney and Nate Cleveland. The group placed 9th overall.
