The Jumbos traveled to Hanover, NH, on Sunday for the 42nd Annual Dartmouth Relays. After nearly a month since their last performance, the Jumbos looked to showcase the strength they built over the holidays. The month of grueling workouts paid big dividends. The team began 2011 with some great performances.

Freshman Graham Beutler got the day rolling with a 3rd place finish in the 400. Beutler’s all out effort earned him a new PR of 51.69. Fellow 400 runners included sophomores Lawerence Xia, Vinnie Lee and freshman Corey Mason. In the 4 X 400 relay, Beutler and Lawerence reunited and were joined by junior Ben Crastnopol and freshman Clint Porte. The relay scored points for the team, placing 7th. Senior Nick Welch ended running events for the Jumbos. After a full year off the track, Welch continued his march back to full strength with an 8:55 in the 3000.

In the field, sophomore pole vaulter Brad Nakanishi placed 4th with a vault of 14 feet, 6 inches. Junior thrower Adam Aronson set an early season PR in the shot put with a throw of 12.27m. Classmate Curtis Yancy placed 11th in the weight throw with a PR of 14.14m. Senior Alex Gresham also competed in the weight throw. In his first meet of the season he threw a promising 13.11.

The Jumbos look to put their nose to the grindstone in coming weeks. They return to competition this Saturday as they host the Tufts Invitational.
