Sophomore Matt Rand led the way for the Jumbos at the Sam Howell Invitational this Friday, clocking in at a new PR of 30:59.86 for the 10,000m race. With the mark, he moved up to 6th on the Tufts All-Time list. Additionally, he qualified provisionally for the 2011 NCAA Championships. Typically, it requires a slightly faster time to earn a trip to the meet. Luckily, those that watched the race all agree that he has an additional 20-30 seconds left to cut off.
Rand was backed by sophomore Tyler Andrews and "super" senior Nick Welch. Welch fared well in his first ever 10k with an even split 31:41.00 effort while Andrews added his own PR of 31:46.13, his first time under 32 minutes for the event. The rest of the team is set to compete tomorrow at the Snowflake Classic. With the forecast for 52 and sunny, it looks like a great New England Saturday in April.
