Sophomore Matt Rand ran a personal best in the 10k this past Friday finishing 7th of 28 competitors at the IC4A Championships. In his third race of the year at Princeton University, Rand truly found his stride as he knocked more than 30 seconds off his previous 10k PR with a time of 30:26.59. As the lone DIII competitor in the event, Rand went out with the lead pack to run an opening 5k of 15:08. After closing in 15:18, Rand moved up to 13th in the DIII national rankings. He is one of two sophomores in the entire nation to break the 31:00 barrier for Division III. After narrowly missing a trip to cross country nationals in the fall, Rand’s race demonstrates that he truly belongs on the national scene and gives the Jumbos a fantastic front-runner for years to come. Rand now shifts his attention to his final race of the 2011 season which will be one week from Thursday at the National Championships hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University.
