One week before the 12th annual TUXC Alumni Race, Hurricane Irene threatened to destroy the course, but on race day Mother Nature was cooperated beautifully. A large crowd of alumni and their families joined TUXC for the 5K cross country race and post-race barbeque. Mild temperatures and clear skies sweetened the day, as recent grads and old-timers reconnected and met the current crop of Tufts athletes.

But first, there was business to be done. Finishing in 16:25, Matt Lacey (‘06) reclaimed his 2010 title with an impressive thirty second win. Unfortunately, his alumni brethren were outgunned by their younger rivals. Kyle Marks (’13) came in first for TUXC in 16:55. He was followed by rising star Andrew Shapero (’14) at 17:01. For the next twelve spots, two TUXC members crossed the line for every one alumni.

Chris Brunnquell (’11), Dave Sorensen (‘07), Nick Welch (’10), and Aaron Kaye (‘05) rounded out the top five for the Alumni team. Ben Wallis (’14), Matt Rand (’13) and Jerzy Eisenberg-Guyot (’11) did the same for the current team members. In a resounding win, the upstarts defeated their older rivals. Needless to say, the alumni men will return for the 2012 race with a chip on their shoulders as they seek to regain the crown.

Current team members look forward to the Bowdoin Invite on September, 18th. Here the TUXC will get to preview the regional course and wear the T for the first college race of the season.
