At Saturday’s annual Alumni 5k Race, the 6th nationally ranked Jumbos were handed a stunning defeat at the hands of the alumni. The alumni were able to sweep the top 10 places in the race, with Matt Lacey (’05) taking the victory in 15:53 over Nate Brigham (’04). An aggressive start saw the Jumbos out to an early lead, with Jake McCauley (’14) and Sam Haney (’13) taking up the early pace. Meanwhile, the alumni sat back, grouping up for a hard move at 200 meters that would carry them to their finish sweep. The alumni used their experience to savvily navigate the hilly, winding campus course, with the top 6 runners separating themselves from the main pack in the final two miles. The Jumbos, nonetheless, toiled in the back of the pack after the fast early start, with Tyler Andrews, Joe St. Pierre, and Brian McLaughlin taking the top 3 spots for the Jumbos in 18:08 in 11th, 12th, and 13th places respectively. Three-time All-American Matt Rand finished last for the Jumbos in 22:14, nine-seconds behind early leader Sam Haney who struggled in the final 96 percent of the race. The Jumbos will toe the line again this Saturday at the Bates Invitational, looking to rebound from this early-season defeat.
