The squad’s second meet of the week was at Bowdoin on Saturday. The Jumbos greeted back a number of athletes dealing with injuries and welcomed others to new events.

Across the board, several freshmen stepped up. Alex Karys cleared 6-0 in the high jump, making it a quality event for the new decathlete. Gary Li and Mitch Stallman have started to find their groove in the pole vault and have more to bring in the next few weeks. Mitchell Black qualified for DIII New England’s in both the triple jump and the 800m run, impressively placing 2nd and 1st in the events.

Black's fellow mid-distance runners brought similar intensity to the 800 and 600, with frosh Veer Bhalla and sophomores Alex Schifter and Alex Sheltzer all placed in the top three, setting them up for big things to come. In the 400, freshman Woody Butler went straight to the front and was only just outkicked a lone Bowdoin runner. In the 60m, first-year Bryson Hoover-Hankerson qualified for the finals and worked down to the 7.30s for the first time. Meanwhile in the throws, junior Youssef Maguid and freshman AJ Fields added PRs of their own.

On the oval, junior Liam Cassidy and sophomore Nick Guarnaccia both raced for the first time in the 2013 season and started off on the right foot. Junior Andrew Shapero set a lifetime best in the mile, and sophomore Greg Hardy added another PR (in the 3K) to make him 2 for 2 on the season.

The Jumbos will be back in action this weekend with meets at Boston University and MIT, looking for more qualifiers for the championship meets.
