With most track athletes going for national qualifiers on the flat track of the Gantcher Center to avoid the banked-track penalty, the Tufts contingent for the ECAC Championships at the Armory in New York City was admittedly smaller than years past. But the senior duo of Gbola Ajayi and Brad Nakanishi were determined the make the most of every opportunity as they sought to qualify for NCAAs.

On his third jump of the evening, Ajayi got out to 14.64m in the triple, putting him in second overall and in the top 10 nationally. He’d tack on a couple more centimeters to finish in the runner-up spot at 14.66m. Barring any other big marks elsewhere in the US, Gbola should be set to travel to Illinois next weekend.

In the pole vault, Nakanishi was in a tough battle with several of the other top vaulters in the nation. After clearing his opening height on the third attempt, Brad was clean over 4.67m and prepared to go after the 4.82m mark that would likely send him to NCAAs. He took three solid jumps but unfortunately couldn’t get over. Luckily he only has to wait a few hours and travel back home to Medford to get back after it at the Tufts Last Chance meet.
