The Jumbos ventured to Lexington, Virginia, this past weekend to open their seasons at the Washington & Lee Spring Track Carnival. With little wind and temperatures approaching the mid-50s, it was an excellent start to the outdoor campaign.

Thanks to some uncommon scheduling, the 4x400 kicked off the meet, and the Jumbos relay recorded a time of 3:22.13 for 3rd overall. Junior Graham Beutler anchored the relay in 48.7, holding off a 47.77-open anchor for Washington and Lee. Beutler returned on Saturday in the 400 and 200, recording personal bests in both at 49.40 and 22.17.

Friday evening also saw several Jumbos toe the line in the 5000m. Junior miler Jamie Norton debuted in the event with an impressive 15:09.72. Junior Liam Cassidy was close behind in 15:19.44, and sophomores Joe Poupard and Nick Guarnaccia set new lifetime bests of 15:52 and 15:55, respectively.

On Saturday, junior Ben Wallis produced a great opener of his own, placing second in the 3000m steeplechase in a time of 9:23.68. He was backed by sophomore Marshall Pagano, who returned from injury to clock a time of 10:06.45 for sixth.

Fifth-year senior Connor Rose opened up his final collegiate season in the 1500m with an outdoor PR of 3:59.55 for third. Freshman Veer Bhalla also put up a solid PR of 4:09.62, and both Rose and Bhalla doubled back in the 800 to grab sixth and eighth in 1:55.48 and 1:56.48, respectively. Fellow Jumbo Mitchell Black paced the Jumbos in that event, placing fourth in 1:54.28.

The Jumbo throwers also had successful weekend. Sophomore Brian Williamson placed fifth in the shot put at 15.07m and fifth in the hammer throw with a toss of 47.67m. Senior captain Curtis Yancy, an indoor NCAA qualifier, took sixth in both the discus (43.59m) and the hammer (47.17m) and also grabbed an eighth-place finish in the shot with a toss of 13.83m.

The Jumbos look to build on their season openers at the Tufts Snowflake Classic on Saturday back home in Medford.
