The Jumbos went into the annual BU Valentine Invitational on Boston University on Saturday looking to run some fast times, and throw and jump to some large marks, and they did not disappoint.

The Jumbos had their best showing of the year at BU, as Jamie Norton ’14 and Graham Beutler ’14 both broke long standing school records. Norton broke the 31 year old mile record by running almost a 4 second PR in 4:06.38 after a ferocious final 600 meters, and Beutler broke the school record in the 200 meters, running it in 21.91 seconds. Beutler also had a very impressive day in the 400, as he ran 48.31 in just missing another school record.

In the distance events, Veer Bhalla ’16 had an impressive day, as he broke 2:30 in the 1000 by running 2:29.40. Alex Apostolides ’16 and Bobby McShane ’14 also had nice performances in the 1000 as Apostolides ran 2:31.24 and McShane, doubling back from the 1200 in the DMR the night before, ran 2:33.32. In the mile, Tufts had a slew of runners set big PRs. Besides Norton, 5 other Jumbos broke 4:23 in the mile, as Ben Wallis ’14 (4:18.66), James Traester ’16 (4:21.12), Marshall Pagano ’15 (4:21.22), Sam Garfield ’15 (4:21.50) and Luke O’Connor ’17 (4:22.58) all ran to these very impressive performances on the day.

Francis Goins ’16 had himself a day as well in the sprints. Goins ran a PR of 49.04 in the 400 meters and also ran a solid 22.59 in the 200 meters, which were both top times for him. Alex Kasimir ’16 also had a nice double on the day, running 50.14 to PR in the 400 meters and 23.35 in the 200 meters.

The Jumbos will next host the annual Tufts Cupid Invitational at the Gantcher Center, held this coming weekend. There, they will attempt to qualify more athletes and improve on seed marks for postseason meets.
