Last weekend, the Jumbos traveled to Connecticut College to compete in the Silfen Invitational. There were a lot of notable performances from the squad across all event groups.

The distance guys started things off on a good note for the Jumbos as many athletes competed in the ‘elite’ sections of their respective events, held on Friday night. Junior Mitchell Black won the 1500m with a time of 3:56.82. Sophomore Tim Nichols ran a huge PR in the 5000m, clocking in at 14:45.58 and placing fourth overall. Colin McCrory also had a big day, as the senior broke the 15 minute barrier for the first time ever, running 14:59.79. The steeple crew did some nice work as well. In their 3k steeplechase debuts, sophomore standout Luke O’Connor ran 9:40.03 and placed second overall, and freshman Ty Enos ran 10:02 for fourth. Sandwiched between O’Connor and Enos was senior co-captain Marshall Pagano who clocked in at 9:42.56, a season-best time.

On the sprints side, there were also some highlights. The team went 1-2-4-6 in the 400m. Black doubled back and easily secured the victory in 49.60. Junior Veer Bhalla was runner-up in the event with a time of 50.46. Bhalla was followed by senior Alex Sheltzer who placed fourth overall in a personal best time of 50.82. Junior Alex Kasemir placed sixth in 50.99.

The jumpers and throwers also did very well. Freshman sensation Stefan Duviver placed second in the high jump, clearing 6’4’’. Duviver’s classmate Linus Gordon, placed fourth in the event, clearing 6’2’’. Senior co-captain Brian Williamson placed second in the hammer throw (144’1’’), and third in the discus (134’’9’). Freshman Peter Clark competed in his first ever decathlon, totaling a strong 4617 to rank him in the top tier of freshmen decathletes Tufts has seen in the last decade.

From a team standpoint, the Jumbos easily outpaced the second-best squad, besting Worcester State by over 50 points. With some athletes resting next week to gear up for the NESCAC championship, the team will look to hone in on specific events and move up the seed list prior to the beginning of the championship season in two weeks.
