A pair of Jumbos ventured south to Princeton, NJ to compete in the Friday night Distance Carnival of the Larry Ellis Invitational. Juniors Jesse Faller and Nick Welch, both national qualifiers for the indoor 5,000m, both came away from the evenings races with sizable season bests. In Fallers case, it was even a PR.

Starting the competition off, Nick Welch improved his seasons steeplechase mark by 13 seconds finishing in a time of 9:37.83. His time qualified him for the Open New England Championships next month at UMass Amherst. It was also only 3 seconds off his PR from last season.

Following in Welchs footsteps, Faller added his own memorable performance. Going through the first 3k in 8:37, Faller kicked home in for a 14:26.01 and an automatic qualifier for the National Championships at Marietta College. It was a PR for Faller who ran a 14:31 at the IC4A Championships last spring.

Both athletes are rounding into form at this point in the season and look to make an impact at all levels. With a few athletes competing at the Tufts Decathlon, the rest of the squad will be bringing their best to the 2009 Dartmouth Invitational. Competition starts tomorrow. If these two athletes performances are any sort of representation of the teams fitness and drive, then there should be a slew of great performances coming out of Hanover, NH tomorrow.
